Due to the importance of the city as the cradle of the portuguese nationality and the 'exceptionally well-preserved and authentic example of the evolution of a medieval settlement into a modern town, its rich building typology', Guimarães historic center was classified as World Heritage site by UNESCO in December, 2001.
